Lea County occupies the southeastern corner of New Mexico, bordering Texas to the east, with Lovington as the county seat and Hobbs as its largest city. The county’s judicial system operates within the Fifth Judicial District and includes a District Court, a Probate Court, multiple Magistrate Courts, and several Municipal Courts. These tribunals collectively generate a wide range of records—criminal case files, civil judgments, divorce decrees, probate filings, protection orders, and property-related litigation documents. Because jurisdiction is spread among multiple courts and clerk offices located in different cities across the county, identifying the correct custodian for the records you need is an important first step in any search.

New Mexico provides several avenues for locating court case information. The New Mexico Courts website serves as the statewide hub for court rules, forms, fee schedules, and administrative guidance, while NewMexicoCourts.us can help users identify courts and access publicly available case data across the state. Locally, the Fifth Judicial District Court clerk’s office in Lovington processes record requests for District Court matters, and the Lea County Clerk’s office serves as both the recording office for land instruments and the probate clerk. Online searches are available through the statewide Case Lookup portal, and the Lea County Clerk offers separate online lookup tools for marriage records, probate filings, and property documents through its Liveweb platform. In-person requests can be made at the appropriate courthouse during posted business hours.

Are Court Records Public in Lea County?

New Mexico law provides broad public access to court records through two primary legal frameworks.
